Five Wolves stepped out in style to compete in the first Debate tournament of the year at Spring Valley High School this past weekend (9/18-9/19). The team was led by team captain, Tevin Stewart, who was the squad's only varsity entry in Lincoln- Douglas debate. Newcomer Stephanie Paredes represented Basic Academy in novice Lincoln-Douglas winning three out of four of her rounds. Sage Steffen, Star Fantroy, and Jacob Weckesser debuted in JV and novice Congressional Debate respectively.

The tournament hosted 19 schools with over 680 entries across four styles of debate. Even though this is the first tournament of the year, it is evident the bar has been set high across the district. Many schools have members returning from Nationals, and they are ready to outpace their performances from last year. Several divsions swept the top honors by having contestants who won four out of four rounds of debate.

Hundreds of community members from across valley make tournaments possible by donating their time to judge the various rounds.  We would like to thank both Tommie and Ross Weckesser, Donna Crowley, John Jeffrey, Angie Smith, Gorje Mortero, and Ted Weirauch for representing our share of the judges and being a part of the Basic Academy Speech and Debate family. Without you, this program is just another class assignment.

It has been years sense Basic has had a competitive Speech and Debate team, and the future looks bright for this relatively young squad.

The team returned to the world of competition after a very long hiatus. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, the team is re-defining it's program one tournament at a time.
