Burns participates in KidsVention 2017

Basic Academy Debate had the honor of sending a student candidate to the 2017 KidsVention held at the Henderson Pavilion on October 24th. Joseph Burns-Solis debated Nevada State Assemblyman, Keith Pickard, about whether or not the federal government ought to eliminate the penny. 5th and 7th graders from schools across Henderson, NV gathered together to vote on the debates. Excitement was high, and it was a treat to see the enthusiastic voices of tomorrow.

BAD Society Places at Desert Oasis

Basic Academy's B.A.D society competed this weekend at Desert Oasis High school September 23, 2017.

Congratulations goes out to the first to BAD Society Members placing this season: Connor Bradley, our Debate Captain, was a quarter-finalist Junior Varsity Lincoln Douglas, and Jazzmin Gallardo-Mambaje placed 5th in Novice Congress. Way to go BAD Society!

 The Wolves competed in Novice Public Forum, Junior Varsity Public forum, Novice Lincoln Douglas, Junior Varsity Lincoln Douglas, and Novice Congress, and our Team Captain, Jacob Weckesser, competed in Senate. This was our first competive tournament of the year, and we learned a lot from the experience.

In addition, two team member competed in Speech events on Friday night: Jadon Magana, in Original Oratory, and Jacob Weckesser  in Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking.

BAD Society Hosts 1st ever Shadow Tournament

Basic Academy’s B.A.D Society hosted the first Golden Desert Speech and Debate Shadow Tournament on September 9, 2017.  This tournament was a showcase tournament that allowed varsity members the opportunity to show new judges and novice competitors what a tournament looks and feels like. The tournament was a great success with around 20 schools in attendance including: ATECH ,Arbor View,Bishop Gorman, Canyon Springs, Coral Academy, Coronado, Desert Oasis, Clark, Foothill, Green Valley, Liberty, NWCTA, Palo Verde, Rancho, SECTA, and Spring Valley.  The tournament wouldn’t have went to plan if it wasn’t for our wonderful volunteers and judges. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication. As a bonus, the tournament even ended on time with a standing room only awards ceremony!

Basic to Host First Tournament of the 2017-18 Season

Basic Academy will host the Golden Desert Speech and Debate Shadow Tournament this year.  This is the first tournament of the season, and will allow the opportunity for novice students to experience a tournament alongside varsity mentors.  It will also be a learning lab for new community judges to learn how to effectively judge a Speech and Debate tournament. We are looking forward to welcoming the community to our school as we kick off the new debate season.

Basic Places Student at State Speech and Debate Tournament

​The Basic Academy Debate team attend the State Speech and Debate Tournament held this past weekend at Spring Valley High School. Leading the Wolves, Abbey Wright Skylar, placed 7th overall in the State in Dramatic Interpretation and brought home a trophy too!

Other notable performances include: 
Analy Gonzalez who placed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in Oratory Prelim Rounds, Noah Knight placed 1st,2nd, and 3rd in Foreign Extemp Prelims, Tevin Stewart placed 1st, 3rd, and 3rd, in Domestic Extemp Prelims, and with his partner, Abby, had a 2-2 record in Public Forum Debate. Alex Martinez also had a 2-2 record in Lincoln Douglas debate, Melea Cooely placed 3rd, 5th, and 3rd, in Dramatic Interpretation prelims, and the Duo Team of Jacob Weckesser and Joey Burns placed 2nd, 2nd, and 5th in their prelim rounds.

The BAD Society has this week off to prepare for Districts, the National Qualifying tournament, to be held over the last two weekends of March.  Go Wolves!

LD/PF soar NWCTA Debate Tournament

The Basic Academy Debate team sent its first Lincoln Douglas and Public Forum teams of the season out to debut at the Northwest Career and Technical Academy on September 30th and October 1st. The team was under the leadership of Tevin Stewart and Stephanie Paredes. Sarah Clemmons and Noah Knight competed in novice Lincoln Douglas. Noah medaled as a quarter finalist in that event. In Novice Public Forum, we had Jayla Willis and her partner Nicholas Cumper and Connor Bradley and his partner Jordon Lofink.  Connor and Jordon also medaled as quarter finalists. Tevin and Stephanie competed in a highly competitive varsity PF field and had a record of 3-1. All together, the combined efforts earned the team a third place trophy in the sweeps competition.  Way to go Wolves! 

Debaters Watch the Debate at UNLV

UNLV hosted debate students and coaches from all over the valley to watch the first of several televised Presidential Debates in the 2016 Election season on September 26th.  Basic Academy attended the event with Team Captain, Tevin Stewart, Congress Captain, Jacob Weckesser, and former Wolve Debate MVP, Sage Steffen (now a student at UNLV).  The audience members were able to discuss the debate and interact via a live twitter poll throughout the event.  

Wolves Shine at Bishop Gorman Congress Tournament

Basic Academy started the 2016-17 Speech and Debate season at Bishop Gorman this past Saturday, September 24th. The team was under the leadership of Congress Captain, Jacob Weckesser. Ty Kimball earned honors as his chamber's Top Presiding officer and brought home a gavel, JD Ogle placed 4th, earning him a medal in his chamber, and finally, Joey Burns-Solas took home the first place trophy in his chamber. With nearly 200 students in the competition, it was exciting to see three of our wolves on the awards stage.

AFTER SCHOOL LABS

Event captains will host after school labs in their respective events. The schedule will be forthcoming once the captains verify their availability. Labs will run from 1:00pm - 2:00pm.

In order to compete in a monthly tournament, each student must complete at least ONE lab per event they register in. For Tournaments that offer both Speech and Debate, both labs are required.

The more often you practice and meet with your coach and captains, the better your performances will be.

MONDAY: Interp Labs with Jordon
TUESDAY: Congress Labs with Joey
WEDNESDAY: Speech Labs with Analy
THURSDAY: Debate Labs with Connor
